Anxiety therapy in Copenhagen

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a feeling of uneasiness or fear that can be mild or severe, short-term or long-term. Everyone feels anxious at some point in their life. For example, you may feel worried and anxious about taking an exam or having a medical test or job interview. But for some people, worry, fear, and uneasiness are so overwhelming that the anxiety affects their daily lives.

It varies from person to person how anxiety expresses itself in symptoms. There is also a difference, depending on the type of anxiety involved. At Roseberry Psychotherapy , I focus on the individual person and their needs when I help with anxiety therapy in Copenhagen.

Some of the typical anxiety symptoms are:

  • Heart palpitations, sweating, and shaking
  • Dizziness and restlessness in the body
  • Abdominal pain, chest tightness, and breathing problems
  • Sleep problems
  • Dry mouth and trouble swallowing
  • Concentration problems and irritability
  • Restlessness and anxious thoughts
  • Changed behavior where one avoids or flees from situations where anxiety occurs

How does anxiety requiring treatment arise?

Pressure, stress and strain can trigger anxiety. Strains can include bullying, stress, divorce, unemployment or a death in the family. In addition, financial or physical insecurity and unpredictability can play a role.

Disappointment and difficulties in childhood can increase the risk of developing anxiety. If a child grows up with a lack of love, stability or presence, it can increase psychological vulnerability. Violence, mental illness in the family, abuse or neglect can also have a role.

Anxiety therapy – Treatment

Psychotherapy and medication are the most important forms of treatment. Since the effects of psychotherapy and anxiety therapy are longer lasting than with medical treatment, which can also carry a risk of side effects, it may be best to start with psychotherapy. If your anxiety is so severe that it prevents you from doing normal activities, medication may be needed from the start of your treatment.

When you come to therapy with me, I will first hear how anxiety manifests itself in your life and together with you find out if medication is needed. If so, you should refer yourself to your doctor. When we work together in psychotherapy, you will learn to know the triggers for your feelings of anxiety and what you can do to reduce the anxiety the moment you notice it. If anxiety is present almost all the time to a greater or lesser extent, you will learn to train your attention in a way that allows you to reduce or completely get rid of the anxiety – first in some moments, then in some periods and in the long term for an indefinite period of time.

How long you need to go to therapy before you start to notice lasting improvement depends on the level of anxiety and what the triggers are. I am based in Copenhagen.
