What’s psychotherapy like with me?

I am trained in Gestalt psychotherapy, one of the many different schools of psychotherapy that rely on conversations between the client and the therapist as the primary framework for therapeutic interventions.

The main focus of each session is the meeting between the therapist and the client. Each therapeutic meeting with me begins with a review of your specific needs and possible goals. When we have defined your needs, I find the specific intervention that, in the given situation, creates the best development process for you right now.

Often the therapy will have a twofold focus: to alleviate any acute symptoms or problems and to work more in-depth with the underlying causes of those symptoms. My approach is flexible and always adapted individually to your particular situation.

Psychotherapy can last over a period of weeks, months or years, depending on what your issues and wishes are.

As a Gestalt therapist, I believe that we humans were born with all the necessary skills to solve our own emotional and interpersonal problems and get through difficult situations. But sometimes we get stuck and need help finding a way through them.

My job as a Gestalt therapist is to help you see more clearly what your situation is, how you participate in it, and experiment with finding new solutions or ways to face your difficulties.

I use the first session to find out whether therapy would be helpful and whether I am the right therapist for you. I will ask you questions about your background – childhood, family, education, employment – important events in your past and about your current situation.

If we agree that I’m the right therapist for you, we’ll discuss how often we should meet and make an appointment for the next session.

About me

I was born and raised in the USA and moved to Denmark in 1994 when I married a Danish man.

Before I became a psychotherapist, I had a long career in law: first as a trial attorney in Phoenix, Arizona from 1988 to 1994 and then as a member of the full time faculty at Copenhagen Business School, where I taught and worked on various research projects relating to labour law and human rights until the end of 2016.

I began my training as a Gestalt psychotherapist in 2013 at Copenhagen Gestalt Institute (Københavns Gestalt Institut) with a view to making a career change. I finished my training and received my diploma in June 2017.

As part of my training I have been through a significant amount of my own individual therapy. It helped me learn about myself and how I am in the world. I have personal experience with how Gestalt psychotherapy can support a development process that results in lasting changes for the better. The most important lesson for me has been that much of the development work can’t be accomplished by reading a book or listening to someone explain things to you. It must be experienced yourself so that it becomes “internalized” knowledge

I continue to develop myself as a therapist by going to individual therapy, supervision and participating in training groups. I am also training to become a Somatic Experience practitioner, and I have followed an online course on couples therapy offered by the Couples Institute in the U.S..

Besides my psychotherapeutic practice, I also run a small consulting business, that offers advice and support to companies and organisations that wish to achieve more diversity and gender equality.

As a member of the Danish Psychotherapists Association, I follow the Association’s ethical guidelines.
